By scheduling regular visits, a dentist will have the opportunity to screen your oral cavity for irregularities and potential health issues. If left undetected and untreated, bacteria and microorganisms can lead to serious health problems that develop in the mouth and within the body.

Potential Oral Health Issues

Dental patients consume food and drinks in order to receive their daily nutrition. However, many of these items can cause problems such as an allergic reaction, irritation in the mouth, inflammation, tooth decay and tooth loss and lesions.

When a dental patient experiences these types of issues, a dentist can screen them for a proper diagnosis. While some conditions can be resolved in a short period of time, other can be very serious. For instance, a lesion can also be Dysplasia which is a pre-cancerous oral lesion that is treatable, while Squamous Cell Carcinoma would be a later-stage form of cancer.

Early Detection of Oral Lesions

When a patient visits their dentist for a bi-annual checkup, it often includes a cleaning that involves the removal of plaque buildup and a fluoride treatment. During these routine procedures, serious issues can be discovered that could save a patient's life.

Dentists have many new and innovative tools that is used to screen for the potential of oral lesions and one such tool is called VELscope. This apparatus provides the dentist with the opportunity to view an oral cavity with a different spectrum of light that can draw attention to any potential oral cavity issues.

This dental tool uses fluorescence visualization that shines a fluorescent light onto the mouth by using a special hand-held optical device. It allows the dentist to view the gum tissues to see if there is any abnormal tissue development in the mouth.

For instance, healthy tissue growth will be viewed as an apple green color, while abnormal tissue growth is much darker. If there is a suspicion that oral issues exist, the dentist may conduct further tests to establish if there is cause for concern. They can also come up with effective treatment plans to eliminate the problem.

It is important to have a dentist that will take the time check for abnormal tissue growths and other oral health issues because if it is not caught in time, it can lead to complications and serious diseases. If you are experiencing discomfort in your mouth or would like to receive early detection services, you should speak with your dentist to find out more information about VELscope.
