Why Fibromyalgia is so Complex

Fibromyalgia is both a very complex and chronic condition predominantly affecting women. Although the condition does not affect the lifespan of the sufferer, it is very uncommon for a full recovery, but if a recovery does happen, there is still a high likelihood of a recurrence.

It is a very debilitating condition that can strike anyone. It causes chronic pains and aches. The chronic pain and fatigue that is associated with this disease causes those suffering from it a general discomfort in their body and a loss in the ability to function in a normal manner. There are usually muscular aches and pains, stiffness in the joints and general feeling of fatigue. Most people who suffer from this condition experience problems sleeping and it is almost impossible for you to get a good night's rest. Due to the lack of rest, it makes the general aches and pains experienced that much worse.

Although there are numerous theories about the causes of fibromyalgia, modern medicine has not determined the actual cause. There is no currently known method to prevent the condition.

Fibromyalgia generally causes a widespread, chronic pain. All areas of the body can be affected, although the pain is most experienced in the back and shoulder areas and the neck and hands. Many times there is a tingling or burning sensation and numbness. You may also experience skin sensitivity and nerve pain.

The patient with Fibromyalgia will have symptoms of pain, tenderness in areas of the body and tiredness or fatigue. The symptoms of each patient will vary in both number and severity. The severity of the patient's symptoms may vary depending on their level of stress or even the weather. The diagnosis of Fibromyalgia can be very difficult, because of the common symptoms.

  • Severe lack of stamina, chronic fatigue and severe tiredness
  • Headaches with facial pain, that results from neck, shoulder and jaw muscle stiffness
  • Pain and stiffness in the trunk and abdominal areas
  • Soreness and tenderness in specific areas
  • Itching or burning pain with occasional muscle spasms
  • Irritable bowel or bladder, with a need or urgency to pass urine.
  • The feelings of Anxiety and depression
  • Lack of and Poor concentration
  • Feelings of Restlessness in the legs.

Other symptoms that may also be experienced may include: an impaired memory, sensations of dizziness, ringing sounds in the ears and terrible headaches.

Since medical science has not determined the actual causes Fibromyalgia, the treatment is geared to treating and relieving the symptoms. As with most conditions, there are two methods of treatment and they should be done together. There are things that you can do that might help to relieve your symptoms.

  • Increase the amount or level of your exercise. Patients with higher levels of exercise seem to suffer less
  • Practice stretching exercises on a regular basis
  • Do not use nasal decongestants
  • Cut down on your consumption of both coffee, caffeine and alcohol
  • Control your emotions and behavior to reduce your levels of stress

Your doctor will probably prescribe various medications to help reduce your symptoms

  • Low dosage anti-depressants to help you sleep better and hopefully reduce the pain
  • A combination of a local anesthetic with corticosteroids for the relief of local pain
  • Non Narcotic Pain killers
  • In some instances, narcotic painkillers may be ordered

There is, at the present time, no known cure for fibromyalgia. There is a great deal that is still unknown about this disease and because there are no accurate tests, it is very difficult to diagnose. As the awareness of fibromyalgia continues to grow, there are new treatments being explored. You have more options today because medical research is on going to learn more about the condition and there is hope for a cure in the future.
