It's Never Too Late to Start Dating Again

Let's be honest, as we age we certainly don't lose our desire for romance, or at least a little flirting, with the opposite sex. But dating can be intimidating for some people in their senior years. Online dating is one of the newest, most fun ways to meet new people, but it's important to follow some guidelines to ensure a positive experience. Here are some simple tips when getting "back on the market."

1. When joining a seniors dating site, don't give out your real address to potential dates until you're sure they can be trusted. Find a site that offers you an anonymous email name and address to keep your identity safe.

2. Avoid being specific about where you live. List what region you live in instead of the exact location.

3. Some people have email signatures attached to their messages. These sometimes tell business and personal information like phone numbers and addresses. Avoid including this in your dating emails.

4. Be honest about your age and physical appearance. It doesn't pay to lie, and you'd be upset if someone else showed up for a date not looking like you thought they would.

5. If someone you're communicating with does not show a photo upon request or show up for a date when scheduled, you can be sure they've been lying about their appearance and are avoiding meeting with you. Someone who does this does not have sincere intentions and shouldn't be trusted.

6. Set up dates to meet you in a public place. Tell a friend about the date, where it is, and who you're with. If it makes you more comfortable, have a friend hang out somewhere nearby.

7. Set up to call a friend at a certain time to "check in". Go ahead and let your date know about this.

8. Do not provide financial information to a potential date. Especially details about investments, salary, credit cards, and savings. If someone pushes you for this information, discontinue communication.

9. Also, drop communication with anyone that asks for financial help, gifts, or assistance with family problems.

10. Take it slow once you are regularly communicating with a date. Don't trust anyone who wants too much too soon and proclaims they've fallen in love with you quickly (however nice a fantasy it may seem).

To get yourself started, you'll need to pick a site that appeals to you and create a profile for yourself. This is easier than it seems. Here are some tips to get you going:

1. It is essential that you post a photo. You'll get a much better response when you do. You'll also find yourself responding mostly to profiles with photos.

2. Have someone check your grammar and spelling. You don't want to give the wrong impression.

3. Describe all your interests and hobbies. This is the best way to find someone who connects with you and has similar interests.

4. Ask yourself what kind of a relationship you're seeking. Are you looking for a casual romance, a friendship, or something more lasting? Be honest about this in your profile so that you can find someone with a similar desire.

5. Fill in all the profile questions as instructed. Leaving things blank can look suspicious.

6. Think of those interests that make you stand out from the crowd. Avoid cliché interests like "long walks on the beach", unless that is truly something that you love.

7. Look over your profile before posting it to make sure it's what you want to say about yourself.

There are plenty of sites out there for senior dating.
