Lifeline Medical Alert Review 2026

Medical Alert Pendant

You might know this company as Philips Lifeline — it’s been around for decades and is probably the most widely used medical alert system in the country. Philips sold the business to Connect America back in 2023, so things may have changed since our testing. We want to flag that upfront because pricing and service terms could be different now.

What we found when we tested the HomeSafe system was a bit of a mixed bag. The response time was genuinely fast — 12 seconds, which puts it second only to Medical Guardian in our rankings. But the pricing is steep at $39.95 a month plus a $99.95 setup fee, and the fall detection was disappointing. It costs $15 a month (the highest add-on fee we’ve seen anywhere) and only caught 5 out of 10 simulated falls. Sarah was particularly frustrated by that combination — “you’re charging more for worse performance” was how she put it.

There are things Lifeline does well, and we’ll cover all of them below. But for most families, there are better values out there.

Note: Lifeline is now owned by Connect America. Pricing, plans, and service terms may have changed since the ownership transition. Prices and availability should be verified on the provider’s website.

Editor’s Rating: 4.0 / 5

Key Findings

  • In 10 test calls, HomeSafe connected to help in an average of 12 seconds — one of the fastest results we’ve measured
  • The system costs $39.95/month plus a $99.95 setup fee — significantly more than most competitors
  • Fall detection costs $15/month — and only detected 5 of 10 simulated falls in our testing
  • The free My Lifeline caregiver app provided reliable push notifications during all test calls

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • 12-second response time is second only to Medical Guardian (8 seconds) in our testing
  • Large, clearly labeled buttons make the device easy to use
  • Water-resistant help button can be worn in the shower
  • Free caregiver app sends push notifications for every emergency call
  • No long-term contract required

Cons

  • $39.95/month for the home cellular system is well above average
  • $15/month for fall detection is the highest we’ve seen — and it underperforms
  • $99.95 setup fee is charged upfront
  • 500-foot pendant range is shorter than competitors (Bay Alarm Medical: up to 1,000 feet; Medical Guardian: 1,400 feet)

Testing the Lifeline HomeSafe

Setup

The HomeSafe arrived with one base unit and one fall detection pendant (which also functions as the help button on systems with fall detection enabled). Setup: plug in the base unit, wait for the cellular signal light to turn green, press the help button. An agent confirmed the system was active within seconds.

Emergency Response

In 10 test calls placed throughout our home, the HomeSafe connected to a live agent in an average of 12 seconds. The base unit’s speakerphone was clearly audible from across the room. The free My Lifeline app sent push notifications to caregivers during every single test call — reliable notification performance that many competing apps struggle to match.

Fall Detection

Adding fall detection at $15/month, the HomeSafe detected:

  • 3 of 5 fast falls
  • 2 of 5 slow falls
  • Total: 5 of 10

This is below average performance for fall detection. At $15/month, the pricing is the highest of any system we tested, which makes the accuracy result especially disappointing. For users who need reliable fall detection, we recommend the Medical Guardian MGMini Lite (8/10 falls, $10/month) or Bay Alarm Medical’s SOS Micro (7/10 falls, $10/month).

Final Verdict

Lifeline’s monitoring response is genuinely fast — 12 seconds is a real strength. The caregiver app notification reliability is also impressive. But both of those positives are undermined by pricing that significantly exceeds comparable systems, and fall detection accuracy that doesn’t justify its $15/month premium.

Recommend Lifeline if: Fast response time is the top priority and fall detection isn’t needed. The HomeSafe without fall detection ($39.95/month) provides fast, reliable monitoring with a solid caregiver app.

Look elsewhere if: You want fall detection, lower monthly costs, or a longer in-home pendant range. Bay Alarm Medical and Medical Guardian both deliver superior value across those categories.

Prices and availability should be verified on the provider’s website. Lifeline is now operated by Connect America, and pricing and service terms may differ from what is described above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Lifeline cost?
Lifeline's HomeSafe cellular home system costs $39.95 per month, plus a one-time $99.95 setup fee. Fall detection adds $15 per month, bringing the total to $54.95/month. A landline version is available for $29.95/month with the same $99.95 setup fee. Note: Lifeline was sold by Philips to Connect America in 2023. Pricing may have changed under new ownership — verify current rates on the provider's website.
Does Lifeline require a contract?
No. Lifeline offers month-to-month service with no long-term contract. You can return your equipment at any time to cancel service. Lifeline provides a return label at no cost. Prorated refunds may be available, though processing can take four to six weeks.
What is the range of Lifeline's in-home system?
Lifeline's HomeSafe has a pendant range of 500 feet from the base unit. This is shorter than most competitors (Medical Guardian's home system reaches 1,400 feet), but sufficient for the majority of homes.
Is Lifeline's fall detection worth the extra cost?
In our testing, Lifeline's fall detection detected only 5 of 10 simulated falls and costs $15/month — the most expensive fall detection add-on we've tested. For most users, the $15/month premium is not justified given the accuracy results. Users who specifically need fall detection would be better served by the Medical Guardian MGMini Lite (8/10 falls detected, $10/month).
