We tested all three current Eargo models over several weeks, and the thing that struck us most was how quickly you forget you’re wearing them. Rachel wore the Eargo 8 to a family dinner and her sister — who was sitting right next to her — had no idea she had hearing aids in. That kind of discretion matters to a lot of people, and Eargo delivers on it better than anyone else in the OTC space.
That said, Eargo isn’t perfect, and we don’t think they’re the right choice for everyone. Only one of their three models has Bluetooth, the premium models are pricier than many competitors, and they’re strictly for mild-to-moderate hearing loss. The company subsequently settled the matter and pivoted fully to a direct-to-consumer OTC model — Eargo no longer bills insurance directly. What We Like About Eargo
Genuinely invisible design. Eargo’s completely-in-canal devices are among the most discreet hearing aids available. When properly seated, they are nearly undetectable — even by the wearer in a mirror. For buyers who are self-conscious about visible hearing aids, this remains Eargo’s most compelling differentiator.
Simple, intuitive experience. Setup is guided by the Eargo app, and the onboarding process is among the most accessible we’ve tested. Hearing adjustments happen through the app or automatically through Eargo’s sound adjustment technology.
Included remote audiologist support. Eargo provides access to audiologists via phone, video, and chat at no additional cost for the life of your devices. This is a significant benefit in the OTC category.
Portable charging case. All Eargo models come with a charging case that doubles as a carry case. It’s slim, easy to use, and provides at least one additional full charge on the go.
What Could Be Better
No Bluetooth streaming on SE and 8. Only the entry-level Eargo Link offers Bluetooth audio. Users who want to stream from a phone or TV must either step down to the least expensive model or accept this limitation in the higher-priced options.
Shorter battery life on the Link. The Eargo Link’s 9-hour battery is adequate for many users but falls short compared to other Bluetooth OTC options. Active streaming shortens this further.
Not suitable for significant hearing loss. As OTC devices, all Eargo models are designed exclusively for mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Buyers with greater hearing loss will need to explore prescription options.
Sound Quality
Eargo devices consistently produce clear, natural-sounding amplification in quiet environments. Conversational speech is reproduced faithfully, and most users report minimal wind noise due to the in-canal placement — a design advantage over behind-the-ear styles.
In noisy environments like restaurants, the Eargo 8’s Smart Sound Adjust technology helps distinguish speech from background noise, though performance in complex acoustic environments is more limited than premium prescription devices.

The Eargo SE and 8 offer enough run time to cover a typical waking day without recharging. The Link’s shorter life requires users to assess whether their Bluetooth usage habits align with the 9-hour window.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Eargo hearing aids accumulate earwax like all in-canal devices. The brand provides a cleaning tool and instructs users to clear the Petal tips and wax guard regularly. Wax guards should be replaced when sound quality drops or becomes muffled — replacement packs are available directly from Eargo.
Eargo provides clear cleaning video tutorials through their support resources, which makes maintenance approachable for first-time hearing aid users.

Who Should Buy Eargo?
Eargo is an excellent choice if you have mild-to-moderate hearing loss and discretion is your top priority. The near-invisible design, user-friendly app, and included audiologist support make it one of the most complete OTC packages available.
